THIS is true

“This is true” my wife said.

On Sunday 27th June I was returning from a walk with my wife, accompanied by our three children on their bikes.

It was a 6.85km walk in total. But in the final 0.05km, after nearly an hour of mixed conversation and beautiful shared silence, I made a remark…and my wife agreed with me saying “this is true”.

Then the insight came, it struck me in the middle of the chest. “This is true”.

We are pursuing truth all the time. Seeking. Trying to find it in books already written, in facts and figures, in science experiments already conducted, in churches, in equations, in nature, inside ourselves.

“This is true” is a reminder that everything else, is exactly that – something else. “This” is now. The present. Everything else is just a reminder, or an expectation. A historical marker, or a future unknown. But “This” or “Dis”, is true.

So many of us look for truth in the content of life. In words or pictures. We listen to try and hear answers. Rather than looking at the nature of life itself. That our very existence is but an incredible chain of moments strung together. Each one presenting you with a new ‘truth’. Because what is true for you, will be different to other people. But to acknowledge that we both exist and breathe in and out together, sometimes in unison, is to understand that “this” is true.

As the kids cycled ahead and opened the garage to put their bikes away, I stopped with my beautiful wife at the top of our driveway next to the letter box. I put my hands on her waist and looked into her deep, incredible eyes. Into her soul, as her soul welcomed mine. And we both knew. We just knew.

“THIS is true”. I said to her.

I leant in, the coldness of the winter air impressed on my cheeks and nose. I closed my eyes, as she did hers, and we kissed. And in that moment, I knew.

That this…is true.

Enjoy this.

Resist the urge, the longing for “then” or “there”. Your socially conditioned (perceived) need for “that” or “those things”. The idea that “They” have more or know more.

This is true.

I am, is true. Not I was, not I will be.

And I am very, very grateful, for THIS.
